February 23 - Defender's Day
Fatherland Defender's Day - a holiday celebrated on February 23 in Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Kyrgyzstan and Transnistria. Was established in the USSR in 1922 as Red Army Day and Navy. From 1949 to 1993 was called "Day of Soviet Army and Navy." After the collapse of the Soviet Union also continues to celebrate the holiday in some CIS countries. Due to the widespread stereotype in society that the full "defenders of the Fatherland" are only men, as well as in connection with the celebration of "March 8" International Women's Day, the Day of Defender of the Fatherland is often perceived and positioned at an informal level as the "day of all men" .
